"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
~Native American Proverb
The team at Greenstar has a strong desire to positively impact mother earth and our community.
Promoting goodwill and raising awareness to the diverse needs of others are at the core of our beliefs and values.
Greenstar hopes that through public awareness, we will inspire others to find out more about these worthy causes
and explore more ways to help.
We don't just talk the talk. Composed of a group of Greenstar volunteers, the Green Team looks for ways to make
our company and surrounding community greener by developing and implementing strategies to reduce our negative
environmental impact at work and at home. Here are a few of our newest initiatives:
Through education we can all learn about environmental issues and make changes to our lifestyle that collectively
can have a significant impact. Protecting the environment is no small task.
There are so many factors to consider when trying to live a greener life, that some may become overwhelmed
at such a seemingly daunting task. The thing to remember is that every small step is a smart step in the right
direction to environmental harmony.
- We will be setting up a vegetable garden this spring at the back of our parking
lot and the bounty of organic vegetables will be donated to the local food bank.
An on-site compost bin will provide vital compost for the garden and reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.
- To further reduce our waste, on-site recycle bins will be set up to collect cans, bottles and electronics.
As there is no recycling pick-up in Langley's industrial areas, a member of the team will take these bins to a recycling depot.
- Paper is picked up every other week by Urban Impact Recycling. In 2007 this effort kept 115 cubic yards or 57 full sized pick-up trucks
of paper from entering the landfill and saved 19 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Green Team Mission Statement:
To take an active role in the promotion of environmental responsibility and awareness within our company
and our surrounding community by making environmentally sound choices to reduce our environmental footprint,
and by participating in local environmental initiatives.
For every bag of CocoEarth sold, Greenstar donates $0.15 to the Burns Bog Conservation Society.
The Society was founded in 1988 and has successfully stopped major development of the area and brought
awareness globally to the importance of this sensitive area.
Burns Bog is a raised peat bog in Delta, BC and is the largest undeveloped landmass in North America.
It is also the only known raised peat bog in a Mediterranean climate.
Mining of peat moss is damaging environmentally sensitive areas that take thousands of years to create.
Nature has worked long and hard to give us a natural water and air filtration system and we are endangering it.
In addition to being a natural filtering system, Burns Bog is also home to many rare and endangered species of
animals and fauna that can only grow in this type of environment.
Coco Coir is a sustainable resource and a by-product of the coconut industry.
Coco is an environmentally friendly product to replace peat moss and is endorsed by the Burns Bog Society.
